Biography (EN)
Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg was born on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Belgium. His father enrolled him in Shotokan karate as a child, and Van Damme later earned a 2nd-dan black belt, competed in karate and kickboxing, won a European professional karate title, and claimed the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978. He also studied ballet for five years, something he later described as one of the hardest athletic disciplines. In 1982, he moved to the United States to pursue an acting career, and his major breakthrough came with Bloodsport (1988). That success turned him into one of the defining action stars of the late 1980s and 1990s, with films like Kickboxer, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, Timecop, and The Quest. Later, he earned renewed respect for his self-aware performance in JCVD and remained active through projects such as Jean-Claude Van Johnson, The Last Mercenary, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and The Gardener.
